Tips For Summer RV Storage
If you are a snow bird, you may use your RV all winter and store it during the summer. In this case, you need to make sure it is stored properly against some of the biggest threats of the summer season. In summer, UV rays and sun damage, mold, and pests are the biggest concerns for a stored RV. The following guide can help you avoid damage.
Sun Damage
The easiest way to avoid sun damage is to keep the RV out of the sun. If possible, rent a covered RV storage space so that you don't have to worry about damage to the roof, tires, or other RV components. If this isn't an option, then take steps to protect against sun damage. Put in temporary UV-resistant window shades during storage, for example, and use tire covers to protect the rubber. For motorhomes, don't forget to put in shades in the cab area, as well, so that sun doesn't damage the upholstery or other interior components. If the roof will be exposed, perform a full inspection before storage and reseal any weak areas. You can also pain the roof with a UV roof protectant to help cut down on damage.
Mold
Mold is the result of moisture, which can be hard to counteract when you are storing the RV. Leaving a vent or two open can help, but only if you can be sure that rain won't blow inside. A Humidity meter can also alert you to issues if you will be checking on the RV regularly. There are also damp-fighting products that help absorb excess moisture in the area if you leave them in the RV during storage. To further cut down on mold issues, store linens and fabric items in sealed tubs with a moisture absorbing packet. Also, empty out and flush the water system, just as if you were storing it for winter.
Pests
Pests are drawn to an RV for three things -- shelter, food, and water. Keeping as many access points plugged as possible will cut down on pests, but you can only eliminate them if you handle the food and water parts. Remove all food and items pests may see as food, like cardboard and toiletries, from the RV before storage. Wipe down all surfaces, including inside cabinets and the refrigerator. Even upholstery should be vacuumed thoroughly so there is no residue that could attract a pest.
